Comparative performance of mesophilic and thermophilic acidogenic upflow reactors

چکیده
Two anaerobic acidogenic reactors, one mesophilic (37 8C) and one thermophilic (55 8C), were operated with a synthetic wastewater at a series of organic loading rates (OLRs). There was almost no difference between the two reactors for chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction, and degree of acidification at any given OLRs. However, the thermophilic reactor had a higher substrate degradation rate, biogas production rate, and specific formation rate of aqueous products than the mesophilic reactor. The predominant acidogenic products in the two reactors were acetate, propionate, butyrate, and ethanol. The distribution of acidogenic aqueous products was significantly influenced by OLR, but not by temperature. Only 1.7 /7.9% of the COD in wastewater was converted to hydrogen/methane for the mesophilic reactor, and 2.5 /8.8% of the COD for the thermophilic reactor. # 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. Comparative performance between temperature-phased and conventional mesophilic two-phased processes in terms of anaerobically produced bioenergy from food waste.
Comparative evaluation of bioenergy production from food waste was carried out with both a temperature-phased and a conventional mesophilic two-phased process at different organic loading rates (OLRs). No methane was detected in the temperature-phased thermophilic-acidogenic fermenter at all the OLRs tested. However, a significant amount of methane content was detected in the conventional two-p...
متن کاملEffects of process stability on anaerobic biodegradation of LAS in UASB reactors.
Anaerobic biodegradation of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) was studied in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors operated under mesophilic (37 degrees C) and thermophilic (55 degrees C) conditions. LAS C12 concentration in the influents was 10 mg.L(-1), and the hydraulic retention time in the reactors was 2 days. Adsorption of LAS C12 was assessed in an autoclaved control reactor...
متن کاملMicrobial Diversity in Thermophilic Adaptation on Pome Treatment
Microbial diversity in a thermopilic UASB reactor producing biogas from palm oil mill effluent (POME) was investigated. The PCR-based DGGE analysis showed that the microbial population profiles changed with the temperature transition from mesophilic to thermophilic conditions. Acetotrophic and hydrogenotrophic methanogens were found in all three phases: the seed sludge, transition from mesophil...
متن کاملThe effect of temperature and retention time on methane production and microbial community composition in staged anaerobic digesters fed with food waste
Background Food waste is a large bio-resource that may be converted to biogas that can be used for heat and power production, or as transport fuel. We studied the anaerobic digestion of food waste in a staged digestion system consisting of separate acidogenic and methanogenic reactor vessels. Two anaerobic digestion parameters were investigated. First, we tested the effect of 55 vs. 65 °C acido...
متن کاملDrivers of microbial community composition in mesophilic and thermophilic temperature-phased anaerobic digestion pre-treatment reactors.
Temperature-phased anaerobic digestion (TPAD) is an emerging technology that facilitates improved performance and pathogen destruction in anaerobic sewage sludge digestion by optimising conditions for 1) hydrolytic and acidogenic organisms in a first-stage/pre-treatment reactor and then 2) methogenic populations in a second stage reactor. Pre-treatment reactors are typically operated at 55-65 °...
